SKETCHBOOK Assignment
After learning about project guidelines for the unusual interiors study, consider what questions you want to investigate through this piece. Fill out the first page of the Guiding Questions worksheet to get you started (link below). Complete the practice section of the worksheet in your sketchbook, this will be checked as your sketchbook grade. Complete the worksheet by the end of the project and turn it in with your final piece.
THINGS TO CONISDER:
• Composition: Remember to consider the rules of composition (rule of thirds, odd numbers, let object run off the edge of the frame, diagonal lines create interest)
• Consider overlooked spaces and places that wouldn’t typically be viewed as interesting. • Think about perspective and lighting.
• Try sketching various spaces and pick one or two to focus on in later steps to see which
one you are most excited about and will create the most interesting final piece.

Final Project Assignment:
What creates an unusual interior scene?
Reminders:
- Create a work of art that focuses on an unusual interior.
- Consider what may not be typically viewed as beautiful: under the sink, the stove in the kitchen, the inside of the dishwasher, clothes hanging in a closet.
- Consider an interesting perspective: a view up the stairs, a space with a high ceiling.
- Consider how the light adds to the space: light through the window reflecting on a wall, a dark space vs. a light space.
- You can include a figure or not.
- If you are doing the drawing portfolio focus on portraying accurate (or extremely exaggerated) perspective and accurate value. This is a good opportunity to show your technical ability and understanding of these two basic art techniques.
What creates an unusual interior scene?
- Things typically not paid attention to:
- A study of light reflecting on wall.
- A view up a stairwell.
- Reflections on a window.
- Small details.
- Things not typically seen as beautiful:
- Pipes under a sink.
- Trash in the trash can.
- Shoes piled in a closet.
- Shirts hanging in a closet.
- Extreme perspective:
- View from above or below.
- Constructed interiors:
- Elements collaged together to create a new interior space.
Reminders:
- Select an unusual interior. Don’t do a typical scene of fruit or flowers on a table, chairs in a living room, etc. Think outside of the box.
- Under the sink, an unmade bed, an area that is typically overlooked.
- Focus on accurate representation of proportion, value, and lighting.
- If you want to exaggerate proportion and value, push it over the top to make it look intentional, not like you made a mistake.
- Consider whether or not to include a figure, it can make the scene more dynamic.
- Medium is up to you.
